David Peterson  - the voice of gardening

Celebrity Gardner David Peterson is a living encyclopaedia on all things gardening having worked for 37 years in the nursery industry. Over those years David has attended countless seminars on horticulture both as a participant and guest speaker and has even found time to share his vast knowledge delivering lectures in horticulture at TAFE.

Aside from managing Wallsend community Nursery, David hosts a weekly radio talkback show on 2NURFM as well as a fortnightly show delivering guidance and expertise on gardening and horticulture.

Sought after to speak at gardening groups and called on to open countless horticulture or gardening shows, David a proud Novocastrian. He spends his free time visiting the local eateries with friends, exercising at the gym and surprise surprise – pottering in his own garden where bromeliads are his passion.

The Nursery

The Nursery has evolved over the years with a respect for the history and heritage of Newcastle. The rich history, strong community links, memorable stories and historic pieces that make up the nursery and its grounds are inspirational.

  • The car park has been paved with bricks from the demolished Broadmeadow Racecourse Clubhouse .
  • The internal pathways are made from the Hamilton Flour Mill building that was destroyed in the Newcastle earthquake.
  • There are tributes throughout the nursery where bricks have been deliberately laid bottom side up to display the stamp of the brick manufacturer. The brickwork companies were vital contributors to the past economy of the Newcastle and the Hunter.
  • Coins have been set in the cement paths throughout the different stages of development and upgrade of the nursery throughout the years. One piece of path remains that holds a penny from 1950.
  • The land that the Nursery stands on was levelled with fill from the Gretley Colliery.
  • Two crucible pots that held molten metal from the original BHP operations are now home to Papyrus. The pots are made from graphite and were given to the Nursery by the first General Manager of BHP. They date back approximately 75 years.

Enterprise Employment

At Lifestyle Solutions we have identified a significant gap in employment options for people in the community who find it challenging to gain and maintain long term employment. As a result, in March 2011, we purchased the Wallsend Community Nursery to establish a Work Assist Program and address this gap in employment options for people with disability. Read more
